Land Rover has officially taken wraps off the all new 2018 Discovery, the full size seven-seater SUV of the company. The new Discovery will go on sale in the US in mid-2017 followed by UK the same year.
Land Rover says that the 5th generation Discovery will be the “best family SUV in the world” with it’s best in class and never before comfort, luxury, safety and capabilities. The SUV is built on a lightweight aluminum construction that helps it to reduce the weight by about 480kg resulting better handling and fuel efficiency.
The all new Discovery still carries the silhouette of decades old iconic Discovery design language with some modern touches. It looks like a mixture of the Evoque and the Discovery Sport with conventional roofline and rear end of the Discovery. With that it manages to look all fresh, stylish, aggressive and appealing. Inside, it gets stadium seating configuration making able to fit all seven adults, a difficult task for any SUV maker.
The 2018 Discovery will be sold in four trims- S, SE, HSE and HSE Luxury. Features like air suspensions, twin speed transfer box, four-mode Terrain Response and two-zone manual climate control comes as standard right from the S trim.
The SE model additionally gets leather upholstery, navigation and automatic climate control while the HSE trim further adds Windsor leather, Meridian-branded audio system, connected satellite navigation, fixed panoramic roof, 20″ alloys and LED headlights with front and rear signature lights.
The range topping HSE Luxury model gets bunch of features like 21″ alloys, electric sunroof, rear seat entertainment, Safety and convenience features such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitor functions, Intelligent Speed Limited, Automatic High Beam, Driver Condition Monitor, HD Surround Camera and Park Assist.
Except the entry-level S trim, all other models will have optional Black Design Pack available.
Apart from the four variants, new Discovery will also get limited run ‘First Edition’ models, 600 units for the UK and 529 for the US buyers. The First Edition will feature unique etched map detailing on the aluminum trim for the doors and fascia, special badges and bold colours there’s also an additional Dynamic Design Pack, which will add contrast roof, athletic front & rear bumper designs, more stylish leather upholstery and sports-inspired steering wheel and pedals.
The SUV will feature hi-tech infotainment system for the entertainment of the passengers. It comes with InControl Touch Pro infotainment system with a large 10″ touchscreen at the center console. This system features iOS and Android, 3G WiFi hotspot, 9 USB sockets (Only in HSE Luxury) a Meridian digital surround system with 14-speaker and a subwoofer.
Coming to the off-road capabilities that’s in the DNA of the Land Rover, new Discovery has ground clearance of 283 mm that can swallow any obstacle between its wheels. It can be driven in the water level upto 900 mm from the ground.
To make it what Land Rover truly stands for, the new Discovery comes equipped with almost all the off-road technologies that exist, it includes Electronic Traction Control, Hill Descent Control, Gradient Release Control, Roll Stability Control, Wade Sensing, Hitch Assist, Trailer Stability Assist, Electrically Deployable Towbar and all new Nose Load Measurement system.
Under the hood, engine options for the US customers will be- a 340 PS supercharged 3.0-litre V6 Petrol or a 254 HP turbocharged V6 Diesel with 600 Nm of torque that comes handy from as low as 1750 rpm. The UK buyers on the other hand, will get choice of an entry-level 240 PS 2.0-liter Ingenium Diesel engine with the 340 PS Petrol unit same as the US.
The choice game doesn’t end here, the customers of the new Discovery will get to choose the colour of their SUV out of as much as 17 options available! Yes, the Discovery will come with 17 different skin options: Namib Orange, Farallon Black, Waitomo Grey, Silicon Silver, Carpathian Grey, Fuji White, Loire Blue, Santorini Black, Corris Grey, Indus Silver, Aintree Green, Firenze Red, Scotia Grey, Kaikoura Stone, Montalcino Red, Yulong White and Aruba.
